Snow can be good for business

All the snow this winter is causing a major inconvenience for a lot of people, but for others it’s a welcome sight.

Getting up early to clear the snow from cars and driveways has become a familiar and dreaded chore for many storm-weary New Jersey residents.

Not for backhoe operator John Scandone. While taking a break from clearing a parking lot in Wall Township, he says the snowy winter is good for business.

“It’s very good because things are bad with the excavating business so snow will bail us out a little bit,” said Scandone.  “You have to get up in the morning you say aw, but once you get out here and start pushing snow and you see what you accomplish and the money you’re making, it changes everything.”

Joe Campagna of Toms River is part of an independent snow removal team. He says shoveling snow from walkways and driveways is providing him with much needed cash.

“If you’re out of work or you’re looking for work, times are tough especially if you’re a blue collar guy, and look at this as an opportunity to go out and make some money,” said Campagna.  “You can pull in easily with you and a shovel if you get up early, you can pull in a few hundred bucks a day and sure that helps a lot. I don’t know about you but a couple hundred dollars is a lot of money to me.”

Hardware store owners are also benefiting from a jump in sales of snow shovels and snow melt.
