Which asteroid has a history of frequently changing its identity?

Answer: Ceres, the classification for this asteroid has changed frequently and been the subject of much disagreement. Some believed that Ceres should be classified as a plant and was assigned a planetary symbol and listed as a planet. However, it soon was classified as an asteroid (star-like) among other classifcations along the way.  Then in 2006 the debate flared up again where Ceres was considered for reclassification as a planet. Ceres remains classified as an asteroid.
