Search continues for missing driver in the Schuylkill

Update, 3:30 p.m., Rescue crews are still searching for a woman whose car plunged into the Schuylkill yesterday afternoon after barreling through a wall on Kelly Drive in East Falls.

The search team spent the day using sonar to try to find the body in the water.

Philadelphia Police say the accident happened at 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of Kelly Drive and Ferry Road. Witnesses say the car was traveling southbound on Ferry Road when it sped into the wall along the riverbank and crashed into the river.

A few seconds after the crash, witnesses saw the driver near the third bridge pillar screaming for help as the current swept her downstream before she disappeared. Police say she is described as a black female in her mid-40s.
