Sandy-damaged house hits another during lifting

A house in a New Jersey shore neighborhood ravaged by Superstorm Sandy slid off its foundation and into a neighboring home as it was being raised for flood protection. Now both houses will have to be demolished.

Dale Leubner, spokesman for the borough engineering office, told NJ.com that it’s just too dangerous to try to salvage anything. “Their belongings were still inside, but (the) house is coming down with the belongings,” Leubner said, “It is too unsafe and unstable to allow anyone inside to get the belongings, I know the owner, I feel really bad for him and his family. It is too unsafe to have anyone walk around.”

Authorities say the house being elevated Friday in Highlands slid while being moved and struck an adjacent house. Both had been flooded during the Oct. 29 storm, taking on 5 to 6 feet of water. Both were unoccupied and no one was hurt.

Numerous other homes have been elevated in Highlands without incident.
