Rising Sun Plaza honored 16 Northeast students last lost month in its annual My Mom’s/Dad’s the Greatest Essay Contest . Students ranging in age from 8 to 18 were chosen for their creativity and originality in essays acknowledging their parents’ dedication by supporting their belief that their mom or dad is the greatest.

Mayor Michael A Nutter and Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce President Al Taubenberger were on hand to congratulate the first place winners and seven runners-up winner in each of the Mom & Dad Essay contest categories. Miten Amin from Robert Pollock Elementary School and Katie Crespo from St. Hubert’s High School were each awarded a $500 shopping spree gift certificate as winners of the contest, and 14 runners-up each received $100 shopping spree gift certificates.

The mission statement of Rising Sun Plaza is to work together with the Mayor’s office to bring real change to the quality of life of everyone who lives in, works in and visits Philadelphia. The annual essay contest was established to further that mission statement by encouraging young people to acknowledge their parents’ dedication by entering essays in the contest. In 2009, Nutter recognized the event with a ceremonialletter and the event has now become an annual tradition.
