Ride-hailing services law ends Pennsylvania regulatory fight

A new Pennsylvania law allows ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft to operate legally in the state. That’s after years of regulatory battles that included a record-setting $11.4 million state fine on Uber.
Gov. Tom Wolf signed the bill Friday. It took effect immediately.
A key provision remains a subject of debate, that being whether the law wipes out the Uber fine. Lawmakers who helped negotiate the bill say it’s not designed to undo the fine.
Wolf says the law ends questions about the legal operation of ride-sharing companies in Philadelphia. An assessment will deliver a projected $2 million annually to the Philadelphia School District.
Philadelphia Sen. Vincent Hughes called the law a start, but said issues involving drivers harassing women and refusing service to African Americans must be fixed.
