Police: man claims to have shot would-be robber

Police are investigating a fatal shooting and a man’s claim that he shot the victim after a robbery attempt.

Authorities say they found the unidentified 30-year-old man in an alley just after 10 p.m. Thursday in the Frankford neighborhood. A 56-year-old man who was at the scene told police he fired the shots after the younger man tried to break into his car.

The Philadelphia Daily News reports that detectives are checking surveillance cameras in the area. It’s unclear whether the shooter had a permit to carry.

Chief Inspector Scott Small says investigators were surprised to encounter the man who allegedly pulled the trigger, since shooters normally flee.
