Police investigating whether fatal Germantown shooting was homicide or self defense

Philadelphia Police homicide investigators are currently investigating a fatal shooting which occurred in Germantown just after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

A department spokeswoman said the 39-year-old victim was shot multiple times in the doorway of an apartment building in the 4600 block of Fernhill Road at 9:18 p.m.

Investigators on Thursday morning were interviewing a 26-year-old man believed to have fired the fatal shots — NewsWorks content partner NBC10 reported that 14 were fired — to determine the circumstances leading up to the incident.

If it was a case of self-defense, or a robbery gone awry, the shooting might not qualify as a homicide, a department spokeswoman said. The 26-year-old remained at the scene and gave police his weapon, NBC10 reported.
