Philly’s public pools begin to open for the season

The 2014 pool season officially began Friday, with the opening of the Cruz Recreation Center. The Kensington area community pool is the first to open for the summer.

“City pools provide citizens with a safe, fun, free way to cool off in the summer right in their own neighborhoods,” said Michael DiBerardinis, deputy mayor for Environmental and Community Resources. “In addition, our aquatics program provides summer jobs for youth; we employ more than 800 people every summer as lifeguards and pool maintenance aids.”

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation operates and staffs the pools. The city office also provides free swim lessons to children. Parents or guardians can visit or call their neighborhood recreation center to find out how to apply.

Pools will be open from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm Monday through Friday and 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on the weekends.
