Philly City Council members join Greek groups to denounce Oklahoma frat racism

Philadelphia-Area fraternities and sororities are joining together to denounce racial slurs used by an Oklahoma frat.

Lynette Morange of Sigma Gamma Rho says the Oklahoma students chanting the N-word and referencing lynching was abhorrent but not typical of Greek organizations.

“Our focus is on conducting ourselves as leaders and it is my hope that we can overshadow these negative incidences and positive impact our communities,” she said.

City Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown is proud of her sorority and says service-oriented groups are helping change the image of greek life.

“We have indeed moved the needle but when we witness and observe what we saw last week, we are woefully reminded that we have so much more work to do,” she said.

Reynolds Brown says it’s parents who need to teach tolerance.
