Philly boxing champs hand out turkeys for Thanksgiving holiday [photos]

Two boxing champions put down their fists and picked up frozen turkeys to benefit the Philadelphia community. Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard Hopkins and Unified Super Lightweight World Champion Danny Garcia handed Thanksgiving turkeys out to those in need Monday at the Red Cross House at 40th Street and Powelton Avenue in West Philly and Tuesday at the Spring Garden Wash and Lube in Center City.

Both boxers are Philly natives and shook hands and chatted with residents. About 400 turkeys were given to those in need.

Bruce Brisbone said he received a call at home from the Red Cross House to come out and get a bird. He lost much of what he owned in a fire last year and the Red Cross House was there to provide for him. He’s also a boxing fan, and plans to visit his sister and nephew, an up-and-coming boxer himself, in Darby, Pa., on Thanksgiving.

One woman who’s had a tough year said she’s thankful for all the giving. Krystal Wolfe came to the Red Cross House from the recovery home where she’s been staying. To her, Hopkins and Garcia are people who are role models. “I’m a fan of people who are positive,” she said, although she doesn’t follow the sport of boxing.
