Penn State football loses at least one radio home

As the college football season begins to get under way, one team might not have as many media outlets as it did a year ago.

The Jerry Sandusky/Penn State scandal is causing problems with some stations deciding not to carry the university’s games. WLPA Lancaster program coordinator Sue Sensenig says the station dropped the Penn State football and basketball package.

“It was a hard sell, and now with the situation that they found themselves with, it just made our decision make even more sense,” she said.

So far, Sensenig says, the station hasn’t gotten any complaints about the decision from listeners.

“I don’t think they are going to realize until the first day of the season,” she said. “And if we don’t get any complaints. that also tells us that Penn State doesn’t really bring the audience to us.”

At least one other station asked listeners if they wanted the broadcasts, and there was widespread support for continuing game coverage. But in some cases advertiser support isn’t following along.
