Park(ing) Day returns September 21

This Friday Park(ing) Day returns to Philadelphia, temporarily transforming metered parking spots into public spaces just for a day. Last year more than 30 temporary parks popped-up in city streets. Now in its fifth year, Park(ing) Day Philadelphia has more installations planned than ever before: 48 teams will build 58 temporary park installations across the city.

Park(ing) Day feels a bit more mainstream than originally conceived, now that we’re seeing  pedestrian plazas and parklets crop up on city streets. That said, Park(ing) Day remains an important demonstration of the potential embedded in the humble metered parking space when reimagined by design firms, city agencies, and civic groups.
