Our own Jon Geeting is Geek of the Year nominee

PlanPhilly Engagement Editor Jon Geeting has been nominated for Geek of the Year in the Philadelphia Geek Awards.

The nominees for the 2015 Philadelphia Geek Awards, presented by Geekadelphia and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, were announced Tuesday.

Geeting has been a game changer for PlanPhilly, both as a reporter covering the convergence of politics and planning and as a sower and reaper of social media and civic engagement.

Since starting in July 2014, his work has helped PlanPhilly’s Facebook page gain over 1,800 new likes. The average reach for each Facebook post has tripled in the last year, from 671 to 2,024. In the past year, we have gained 3,000 new Twitter followers, and our average number of impressions per day has increased from 4,400 in July 14, to over 7,500 this spring. Our weekly email newsletter gained over 1,700 new subscribers in the past year, and we began a second weekly email that has been very successful.

“Browsing all the excellent people and projects that were nominated this year was humbling this morning, and really drove home for me what exciting times we live in in Philadelphia in 2015,” Geeting said. “There is so much energy around city planning issues right now, and I’m excited about this opportunity to highlight the awesome things my colleagues and friends in this community have accomplished this past year for the cause of better urbanism in Philadelphia.”

For the fifth year running, the Awards will be a celebration of Philadelphia geekery in 13 categories covering science, arts, social media, and in-real-life events and projects.

Tickets for the Aug. 15 black-tie gala, held at the auspiciously geeky Academy of Natural Sciences, will go on sale on Monday, August 3. Read about the other 2015 nominees for Geek of the Year and 12 other categories on the official Philadelphia Geek Awards website.
