Drivers who use Interstate 95 at Girard Avenue will have a welcome surprise with the new week.

PennDOT is opening up a fourth travel lane on I-95 south below Girard Avenue, said spokesman Gene Blaum.

During the long-term construction project, drivers getting on I-95 at that spot have been forced to “floor it” to merge.  Now they will have more runway to get up to speed.

“We’ve advanced some stages of construction to provide motorists with this fourth lane,” Blaum said. “We’ve done some restaging of bridge construction on the northbound side right now to provide the space that is necessary on the southbound side to put this fourth lane into place.”

Work on the area between Allegheny and Callowhill streets will continue for some time, he said.

In the meantime, Blaum said, the additional lane could ease congestion.
