N.J. panel advances adoption birth records bill

Children who are adopted in New Jersey might get access to their birth records.

An Assembly committee on Monday advanced a bill that would allow an adult who was adopted or the child’s adoptive parent to request the birth certificate from the state.Birth parents would be permitted to say whether they wanted any direct contact or any contact at all. Those who don’t want any contact would be required to update family medical history.

The bill awaits a vote by the full chamber.
