New Jersey confirms the summer’s first case of West Nile
New Jersey had 30 reported cases of West Nile Virus last year, but the one now affecting a Mercer County man is only the first of this summer.
The 50-year-old Hamilton Township man is the state’s first confirmed case, and the Health Department says he developed symptoms in July.
The virus is spread through mosquitoes that feed on infected birds, and symptoms include fever and fatigue. Atlantic, Salem and Cumberland counties are the only ones in New Jersey where the virus has not been identified among birds and mosquitoes, according to an Associated Press report.
The infected man did not need to be hospitalized and is recovering at home.
