New Castle County building renamed in honor of slain officer

The New Castle County police academy building has been renamed in honor of an officer killed in the line of duty last year.

Hundreds of police officers, elected officials and friends and family of Lt. Joseph Szczerba attended a ceremony Sunday to rename the county building. Szczerba was fatally stabbed on Sept. 16, 2011, after confronting and chasing a suspect in a vehicle break-in.

Earlier this year, the Faithful Friends Animal Society in Wilmington also named a new cat adoption room after Szczerba. The officer had volunteered regularly at the no-kill shelter.
