Architecture in Film Series: Philip Johnson: Diary of an Eccentric Architect + selected short films by Charles and Ray Eames
Monday, May 7, 6:30pm, screening begins at 7:15. Philadelphia Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. The monthly series is hosted by John DeFazio, AIA (Architect & Associate Professor at Drexel University) and Nick Grouch, Assoc. AIA. Films begin with a discussion of the relevant themes and elements to notice during the screening and are followed by an informal discussion. This month it’s a 1996 biopic of Philip Johnson by Barbara Wolf, as well as selected short films by Charles & Ray Eames dating from 1945-1970. Come at 6:30pm before every film for a wine and cheese reception. $5-$10 suggested donation at door.
Building Philadelphia: Ed Bacon and the Future of Philadelphia
Tuesday, May 8, 6-9:30pm. Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Building Philadelphia: Architecture, History & Politics is a 10-part lecture series by local scholars. Scott Gabriel Knowles will finish the series with a discussion about Ed Bacon and the Future of Philadelphia. Individual lectures cost $25, $20 for members, or $15 for students. Register online.
Transforming Urban Schoolyards: Design Charrette and Public Presentation
Thursday, May 10, 8am-5:30pm Charrette and 4-6pm Public Presentation. Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. The Community Design Collaborative, AIA Philadelphia, and the Water Department will host a charrette to explore how Philadelphia’s schoolyards can become green assets, focusing on solutions for Lea Elementary in West Philly and Kelley Elementary in Germantown. Registration for the charrette is full, but the public is invited for a presentation and panel discussion at the end of the day. Free, RSVP online.
Hip and Hidden Philadelphia: The Unexpected House in a City of Tradition
Thursday, May 10, 6:30-8:30pm. Parkway Central Library, 1901 Vine Street. Authors Virginia Restemeyer and E.I. Weiner scoured the city for one-of-a-kind houses for their new book Hip and Hidden Philadelphia. Come see their discoveries at a book talk at the Free Library. Free.
