What’s 6 stories high made of tin and 134 years old?

It’s Lucy the Elephant, the tourist attaction on the sea in Margate, New Jersey.

Richard Helfant Executive Director of Lucy the Elephant says the tourist attraction is on the National Register of historic places and has been a number of things since she was built in 1881.

“Throughout her lifetime, she’s been a real estate office, she’s been a tavern,” he said.  “She’s been a single family residence for one year, but most of her life she’s been a tourist attraction.”

How do you celebrate an elephant’s 134th birthday?

“We’re taking our visitors back to the turn of the century when the Margate boardwalk was still here and Lucy was on the boardwalk.  We’ll have carnival games, a moon bounce a water slide, a flying Dumbo the elephant ride for the kids.”

Gift shop sales, donations from tourists and a few grants produce the $500,000 a year needed to keep Lucy looking her best.
