Lego art, barn dancing and more: 5 weekend activities for families
It will be a very artsy weekend around town this weekend, but there’s also plenty of stomping, outrageous fun and nature to enjoy.
Enjoy Woodmere’s new exhibition, “I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.” Sound familiar? Kids will enjoy seeing this story-song through the lens of art in paintings, sculptures, and photographs of furry friends. Come in for an open house and children’s party from 2 to 4 p.m. for live music, art and family fun.
Embrace the beauty (and the cold) at Morris Arboretum for a celebration of the Jewish New Year of Trees. Families can enjoy the fun both indoors and out with interactive musical performances and a seed-making activity. What better place to celebrate trees than at the arboretum? 1 to 3 p.m.
Come on down to the Mt. Airy Barn Dance. No experience necessary! Dancers will learn to tap their toes and swing their partners while enjoying the music of some talented teens. This is a fun and lively community event for kids and their grown-ups. 2 p.m. at Summit Presbyterian Church.
Friday through Sunday: Stinky Cheese
This is the last weekend to catch this Sziezka classic at the Walnut Street Theatre. From Chicken Licken to Cinderumplestiltskin to the Stinky Cheese Man himself, fairy tales are turned upside down and into riotous fun. Will the giant be thwarted? Will the duckling still be ugly? You have to head downtown to find out.
Saturday and Sunday: LEGOS as Art
The traveling Art of the Brick exhibit at the Franklin Institute is the world’s largest collection of Lego art. The exhibition showcases more than 70 original pieces and art reproductions in Lego sculpture. Can your kids identify “Mona Lisa,” “The Scream,” and “Starry Night?” Saturday is opening day so attendees will enjoy brick-related fun around the museum.
