Jones secures Philly Council’s majority leader position

Councilman Curtis Jones Jr., recently reelected to a second term in the city’s fourth district, will become Philadelphia City Council’s majority leader in January.

Jones’ district includes parts of Manayunk, Roxborough and East Falls.

In Thursday night’s Council meeting, longtime councilwoman, Jannie Blackwell, stepped down as a candidate for majority leader, noting that she wanted to give others an opportunity to serve in leadership roles.

Her motion cleared the way for Jones, who gained enough votes from colleagues to secure his seat. The majority whip position will go to Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown and William Greenlee will take on the recently added position of deputy whip.
