A South Jersey accident that claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy is under investigation in Franklin Township.

A police officer responding to an incident struck and killed the boy identified as Matthew McCloskey as he walked along Delsea Drive to a sleepover Sunday night. The area around Delsea Drive and Paul Street has sidewalks on both sides unlike many areas of the drive.

The officer who was driving the police cruiser was very shaken up, officials said Monday. It’s unclear if the officer, identified as Patrolman Nicholas Locilento, was using his lights and siren at the time of the 7 p.m. accident.

The Gloucester County prosecutor’s office is investigating the death but has not made any comment at this point.
