I-95 exit to change in Port Richmond … in 2023

An exit from the northbound side of Interstate 95 will be moved several blocks as part of the continuing redesign of the Northeast Philadelphia portion of the highway.

Drivers will have plenty of time to get used to the idea.

The Interstate 95 northbound exit at Allegheny leads drivers to Westmoreland  and Richmond. The plan is to move the exit about a mile to Castor Avenue where an on ramp is located.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s I-95 portfolio manager Elaine Elbich said the move won’t happen for years, but planning is underway.

“The heavy port traffic and the tank farms were best served by an on ramp and an off ramp at Castor,” she said. “And we were also able to add there an additional access to the Betsy Ross Bridge.”

Another benefit of the plan is that Monkiewicz Playground now split by I-95 will be unified. And that sounds good to Patty-Pat Kozlowski, head of the Port Richmond Civic Association, who said that she’s not looking for it anytime soon.

“And when I see it, I’m sure it will be cars like the Jetsons coming off the ramp because it will be light years away,” she said.

The changes are not expected until 2023.
