Eagles’ Akers deals with family cancer scare

if you’re an Eagles fan, you remember what happened a handful of Saturdays ago. The Eagles’ Super Bowl dreams came to a crashing halt with a loss to Green Bay. The final play — an interception thrown by Eagles QB Michael Vick — is what sealed the team’s fate, but earlier in the game, David Akers, the team’s veteran kicker, missed two field goals.

It was said after the game that the 36-year-old was dealing wih personal issues of an unspecified nature. Today, MyFoxPhilly, citing an Inquirer report, reveals that Akers’ six-year-old daughter Halley was undergoing medical tests at the time of the Eagles-Packers game. She was later diagnosed with a rare form of cancer but, happily, is expected to make a full recovery.

Akers’ future with the team is a little more uncertain. The all-Pro is now a free-agent and it is unclear if he wants to return to the Birds.
