Driver dies after car plunges into Schuylkill River

Authorities say a man was pronounced dead after he was pulled from a car that went into a river in Philadelphia.

Police said the vehicle failed to negotiate a left turn onto Kelly Drive and plunged into the Schuylkill River shortly before 3 a.m. Saturday. Officials said it landed on its rooftop in six feet of water about 40 feet away from shore.

A police marine unit responded and recovered the vehicle from the water. The 25-year-old driver was pronounced dead just before 4 a.m. Saturday. His name hasn’t been released pending notification of his family.

Captain Robert Richie told KYW-TV that the car hit a wall and may have hit a pole before it became airborne, flipped in midair and went into the water.
