Downstate Delaware airport to get $3 million expansion

The runway at the Sussex County Airport will be extended by 500 feet as part of an effort to accept larger plans at the airport and attract new businesses to the area.

The Federal Aviation Administration will fund the $3.1 million expansion effort.  Sussex County leaders will break ground on the project in August.  The extended runway is expected to be completed by December 2013.

“These critical funds will not only pave the way for the Sussex County Airport runway extension, but the grant and the project itself will pave the way for new economic opportunities here in Sussex County,” said Sussex County Council President Michael Vincent.

In addition to extending the runway, the money will fund improvements to the airport’s runway approach.
