Don’t get stuck in Delaware construction-related backups

Beginning tomorrow, expect multiple ramp and lane closures in North Wilmington as the I-95/U.S. Route 202 construction project nears completion.

The Delaware Dept. of Transportation said over the next few weeks there will be a series of nighttime and weekend closures as crews enter the final stages of milling and repaving.

DelDOT strongly recommends that drivers avoid the area altogether or use alternate routes. All through traffic is encouraged to take I-495 in lieu of I-95 during these closures. 

The closures are weather dependent and DelDOT said they will be postponed to the following day/weekend if inclement conditions occur.

The closures with detour routes are as follows: 

Friday, Nov. 14 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. I-95 northbound, Exit 8: Closure of the right or left lanes as needed on the ramp from I-95 northbound to U.S. Route 202 northbound. Friday, Nov. 14 AND Sunday, Nov. 16 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. U.S. Route 202 Bridge over I-95: Left lane closed on the northbound and southbound side of the bridge. Monday, Nov. 17 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Closure of Ramp 8/U.S. Route 202 northbound to I-95 southbound. Detour: U.S. Route 202 northbound traffic destined for I-95 southbound will be directed to continue on U.S. Route 202 to Weldin Road. Motorists will make a right onto Weldin Road, make a right onto Foulk Road, make a left onto U.S. Route 202 southbound and take the Exit to I-95 southbound. Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Closure of lanes as needed on the ramps at Exit 8/I-95 southbound. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20 AND Thursday, Nov. 20 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Closure of Ramp 6/U.S. Route 202 southbound to I-95 northbound. Detour: Continue south on U.S. Route 202 to Market Street, turn left onto Market Street, continue on Market Street (Philadelphia Pike) to Marsh Road, turn left onto Marsh Road, follow Marsh Road to the I-95 Interchange. Friday, Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24 I-95 northbound: Closure of the two left through lanes of I-95 northbound. Detour: Traffic destined for points north of the I-95/U.S. Route 202 interchange will be directed to take Exit 8 to U.S. Route 202 northbound West Chester, follow U.S. Route 202 to Naamans Road, make a right onto Naamans Road follow Naamans Road to I-95. 

Construction in one spot or another on the Route 202 interchange began in the 1990’s and is projected to be complete by December 2014. DelDOT said once it’s complete, the improvements will make the exits easier to travel, especially during peak travel times, and safer.
