Developer in contract for Church of the Assumption

PlanPhilly’s Alan Jaffe reports that developer John Wei is under contract to buy the Church of the Assumption complex from Siloam, the social service organization that previously sought to raze the landmark church.

Alan spoke to Wei who said he paid “a million plus” for the church complex, and that he had “no idea yet” what he would do with the site. Wei has developed small properties in Chinatown.

Siloam has been trying for years to demolish the property, a move the Historical Commission approved and the L&I Review Board subsequently overturned. Wei hasn’t said he would preserve the historic church, but the change in ownership does present a very positive opportunity.
