A 2-year-old boy is listed in critical condition after he was shot inside his Claymont home.

New Castle County Police received a 911 call for a 2-year-old shot at 10:05 a.m. in the Valley Run apartment and townhome complex on Cliffside Court. NCCPD Public Information Officer Tracey Duffy said when officers arrived, they attempted life-saving measures on the little boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Police do not know the caliber of the gun or the specifics and the severity of the toddler’s injuries. The child was airlifted by Delaware State Police helicopter to nearby A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children for treatment.

The boy and his mother were alone in the home at the time, Duffy said, and investigators are not sure whether the mother or a neighbor called 911. Police also don’t know if other children live in the townhome.

“We’re just trying to find out everything and anything,” Duffy said. “We’re not sure who owns the weapon, we’re not sure where it was, how the two-year-old gained access to it. We have a lot of unknowns right now.”

Investigators remain on scene; a news briefing is expected at NCCPD headquarters later this afternoon.
