Dance Yourself Fit in Germantown this weekend

If you like to move your feet to hip hop, salsa, reggae, Bollywood and line dancing, Saturday’s “Dance Yourself Fit” in Germantown is for you.

Baby Steps to Healthy Living, a Northwest Philadelphia-based fitness group, is hosting the event at Imani Charter School, 5612 Greene St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

What is it?

Ekeoma Ekeleme-Washington, owner of Baby Steps to Healthy Living, organized the event to show people how to encorporate physical activity into their daily lives.

“‘Dance Yourself Fit is a fitness event presented through dance,” said Ekeleme-Washington. “We have dance instructors who specialize in various dance mediums.”

Those instructors will lead participants through various dance genres with a mix of high-, mid- and low-impact levels of activity. The sessions will include jump ropes, hula hoops and basketball and football workouts.

The event will also include fitness stations, including the opportunity to meet one-on-one with health and nutrition professionals. Healthy refreshments will be available.

Focus on family fitness

Ekeleme-Washington said the aim is to get families out for the day to learn about health.

“Families and communities play an important role in the health and well-being of a child,” said Ekeleme-Washington.

“It is not enough to simply teach children about health,” she continued. “They need opportunities to practice these behaviors: engaging in physical activity and eating healthy, nutritious meals and snacks.”

Tickets for adults are $17 and children between ages eight to 16 are $12 while those seven and younger can participate for free. Some proceeds will go toward the upcoming “100 Fit Kids,” a free children’s fitness conference scheduled or July.
