New Castle County police are reopening some of the state’s old murder mysteries.

The newly developed Cold Case Homicide Squad, under the Division of Police Criminal Investigations Unit, will have a full-time detective and small support staff dedicated to investigating cold case homicides.

According to New Castle County Police, there’s about 40-50 unsolved suspicious death cases, dating back to the 1970s.

“The victims and their families are never forgotten,” said Col. Elmer Setting, New Castle County Police Chief. “We will forever keep working to bring those to justice who have committed these crimes and devastated so many lives.”

Police plan to look at the oldest cases first and use new technology and advances in DNA testing, which was not yet available when many cases went cold.

Seven detectives in the Crimes Against Persons Squad, will continue to investigate current homicides.
