Christiana Mall complex to get huge outdoor retailer

A 110,000-square-foot Cabela’s store, specializing in gear and equipment for outdoor enthusiasts, will be built near Delaware’s Christiana Mall.

Construction at the site along Stanton-Christiana Road near I-95 is expected to begin in 2013.  It will open as Delaware’s first Cabela’s store in 2014.

Across the parking lot from the upscale Nordstrom’s Department store, Cabela’s will feature logs and stonework on its exterior.  The retailer is also known for its elaborate interior layout, which will include animal mounts, a Gun Library and a “bargain cave.”

“It’s always exciting announcing plans for a new store, but there’s added enthusiasm today because it’s Cabela’s first in Delaware,” Cabela’s Chief Executive Officer Tommy Millner said.  “Knowing there are thousands of outdoor enthusiasts across the region, people who share Cabela’s passion for hunting, fishing and outdoor adventure, we’ve had our eye on Delaware for a long time.  Now it’s time to deliver a premier retail experience.”

“We are thrilled to bring this first-to-market, outdoor sports and activities retailer to our center,” added Christiana Mall Senior General Manager Steven Chambliss.

Cabela’s was founded in 1961 and is headquartered in Nebraska.  It has 38 stores in the United States and Canada.

Christiana Mall underwent a transformation lasting several years after two former anchor department stores shut down.  Additionally, adjacent portions of Route One and I-95 are being redesigned to improve the traffic flow.
