Central Jersey high school picked as best in U.S. for math, science

A high school in central New Jersey is considered the best in the nation when it comes to math and science.

High Technology High School in Lincroft is at the top of the list of schools rated by U.S. News and World Report magazine.

There’s plenty of competition among students to get into High Tech High, according to Tim McCorkell, the Superintendent of Monmouth County Vocational Schools. He said the school focuses on engineering and has seniors spend a semester with working engineers.

“We think when you combine high-level academics with a career theme, it really motivates students to another level because it makes the knowledge relevant,” McCorkell said. “They understand why they need to know all these different subjects because then they’re able to apply it in a real-world setting.”

McCorkell said 100 percent of the high school’s students go on to college. Most of them end up with a career in engineering.
