Pennsylvania U.S. Sen. Bob Casey has endorsed first-time candidate Chrissy Houlahan in the Democratic primary for the Chester County congressional seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello.

Casey cited Houlahan’s business record, service in the Air Force, and work in education in giving her his backing.

Houlahan, who announced her candidacy early for the race, has received endorsements from several labor unions and Emily’s List.

Elected officials don’t always pick sides in party primaries, so Casey’s support is helpful to Houlahan.

Houlahan faces Realtor Elizabeth Moro in the May 15 party primary, and other candidates may yet emerge.

Moro had announced for the 7th Congressional seat, but the state Supreme Court-ordered redistricting left her in the 6th Congressional District.

Candidates have until March 20 to file nominating petitions for the race.
