Camden to rehire 19 police officers

On Monday, 19 Camden police officers who were laid off earlier this year will be back in uniform, according to the Courier Post Online.

The officers will be back to patrolling the streets thanks to a federal Community Oriented Policing Services grant.

The city already rehired 55 officers on April 1 after receiving a $2.5 million payment instead of tax funds from the South Jersey Port Corp.

Now 74 of the 163 officers laid off in January because of budget issues have returned to the force.

“We are excited about the return of these 19 officers,” Police Chief Scott Thomson told the Courier Post. “They will augment our current deployments and immediately be worked into our Summer Crime Plan.”
