Abandoned, stranded cars being towed

The state will start clearing vacated cars from the roads so plows and other vehicles can get by safely.

A group of state agencies including the State Police, DelDOT, and the Delaware National Guard are beginning the process of clearing abandoned and stranded cars from Delaware’s roads.

Governor Markell has ordered state workers to start the process of removing vehicles from roads throughout the state.  State officials say if you’ve left your car on the side of the road, and can safely retrieve it, now is the time to do so, or else you’ll have to pay the towing cost.  Some private tow companies have been contracted by the state to do the towing, and their recovery fees vary.

Hundreds of cars were stranded on Delaware roads Wednesday due to extremely slippery conditions plus very low visibility.  DelDOT’s Gary Laing says there were major problems on Rt. 301 Thursday morning.  He says one car got stuck, which in turn stopped about 50 trucks and an ambulance that was trying to get through to somebody who need emergency medical attention.  “They ended up having to have an ambulance swing through Maryland on the other side to get to that person,” Laing said.

If your vehicle’s been towed, you can contact State Police to find where it’s been taken.  State officials say you should not call 911 to find your car, instead contact one of the phone numbers listed below.
