Martin Luther King Monument coming to Lancaster Ave
From this week’s University City Review:
Representatives from the Martin Luther King Historic Marker Project in conjunction with the Restore Philadelphia Corridors along Lancaster Avenue will unveil a MLK Jr. Monument at 40th and Lancaster in December 2009.
The Monument will commemorate King’s historic speech on August 3, 1965, explained the monument’s sculptor, Rebecca Rose. As part of King’s “Freedom Now,” when King visited four other northern city’s including Boston, Chicago and Cleveland, 10,000 Philadelphia residents crammed that intersection to hear the civil rights leader.
