5 family activities to close out the summer in Philly
I know it’s technically not the end of summer, but Labor Day weekend definitely marks a change in routine for many families. Sneak some summer-themed fun in while you still can.
Saturday NEST Chestnut Hill Open House
For those of us who mourned the closing of The Little Treehouse, the wonderful venue has been re-imagined by the seasoned play folks from NEST. This weekend is the kick-off for for NEST hatchling in Chestnut Hill. Events run all day long, so stop by to do art with the art teacher, enjoy storytime, dance with the band, pose in the photo booth, or relax in the yoga class. 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Saturday- Monday Franklin Square Labor Day Celebration
Come and enjoy one last blast of summer fun. Throw pennies in the fountain, run around the square and hang out on the playground for free. Or pay to ride the iconic Franklin Square carousel and enjoy mini golf and the Lightning Bolt Express. Bring the whole family for tons of fun. Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday night you can stay and hang at the Square for a free screening of Ghostbusters.
With a heatwave upon us and pools closing their gates, take this opportunity to cool off at one of the many spraygrounds all around the city. Splash around with the kids before summer is almost over. Which sprayground have you visited this year?
Friday-Sunday Labor Day Picnic and Rollerblading
Come by the gorgeous waterfront and enjoy some great food, music and prizes in this weekend-long event. The space has transformed from a ski lodge to a boathouse with air conditioning and ambiance under the big tent. (Roller skating rental and admission is available for a fee.) Strap on those skates and hit the boards!
This is the first Sunday of the month, and that means that admission to the Barnes Foundation museum is free! Tickets are limited and can’t be reserved in advance; they are available on-site starting at 9 a.m. Hours run from 10a.m. to 5 p.m., and the afternoon offerings for activities include mural drawing, candy-making, and Philly made.
