32 arrested in holiday DUI campaign

The annual effort to reduce alcohol-related accidents around the holidays results in 32 arrests, with more DUI checkpoints scheduled for this weekend.
Since the Safe Family Holiday Campaign started around Thanksgiving, there have been 19 people injured in an impaired driving crash.

During last weekend’s DUI saturation patrols, police arrested 32 people for Driving Under the Influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  Police made 14 drug arrests and 7 felony arrests during their patrols.

So far this year, there have been no deaths in alcohol related accidents in Delaware.  In an effort to keep that number at zero, police will be manning four checkpoints this weekend in Newark, Camden, Elsmere and Georgetown.

Dover –  According to police reports, 1 person was injured in an alcohol-related crash last week.  This brings the total number of people injured in an impaired driving crash since Thanksgiving to 19.  Fortunately, so far this holiday season, no one has been killed in an alcohol related crash.

The DUI Tree project memorializes alcohol-related deaths and injuries which occur during the campaign period by placing colored light bulbs on the tree to represent each victim.  Each red bulb on the tree symbolizes someone killed in an alcohol-related crash in Delaware between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve.  Each green light bulb symbolizes someone injured in an impaired driving crash.

Last weekend Delaware law enforcement officers conducted sobriety checkpoints and DUI saturation patrol statewide which resulted in the arrest of 32 people for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) of alcohol and/or drugs.   In addition to the weekend’s DUI arrests, officers issued 3 citations for underage drinking violations, apprehended 15 wanted individuals, made 14 drug arrests, 7 felony arrests, issued 25 seat belt citations, 5 child restraint citations, and 525 citations for various other traffic violations.

Four sobriety checkpoints are scheduled for next weekend as follows:

Friday Dec. 16th –       Newark – NcCo DUI Task Force

                                    Camden – DSP Troop 3
