North Philly Pop Warner team Superbowl bound

The Eagles aren’t the only Philadelphia football team that’s drawing national attention: a team of 10 to 12 year olds

is in a hurry to find a way to get to the Pop Warner Super Bowl in Florida next month.

The North Philly Blackhawks clinched the spot after a 30-0 weekend win over a Maryland team.

Don Richardson, football Director for the Blackhawks Athletic Club, said a lot of the players look up to the coaches as mentors because they don’t have father figures at home.

“We try to steer the kids in the right direction,” said Richardson. “We know what they up against out here in the streets…we check on them.”

“Pop Warner’s a scholastic athletics and if you don’t get good grades you can’t play,” said Richardson ” So we stress that very wholeheartedly.”

Richardson said the team’s racing to scrape together $30,000 to pay for airfare, housing and food. The team’s first game is scheduled for Sunday December 5th.
