24-hour Planet Fitness on Ridge Avenue opens in time for the new year

One week into the new year: Resolutions have been made, and some, possibly already broken. Weight loss tops the charts as the number one New Year’s resolution, and for folks in Roxborough, that goal may have just gotten a little easier to maintain.

On December 9, Planet Fitness, located at 6219 Ridge Avenue, celebrated its grand opening. It’s been over a year since the Roxborough Development Corporation and Civic Associaton first approved the plan to erect the health and fitness facility on the large vacant lot, formerly a car dealership.

Despite some initial reservations from the community, stemming around traffic concerns and the impact of Planet Fitness’ “open 24 hours” policy, the gym’s opening was highly anticipated and has been met with initial success.

John Bradford is manager at the Roxborough location. He has been employed by Planet Fitness for over three years and is enthusiastic about the new facility.

“Everything is going well,” he said. “We’ve had a positive response from the community so far. People are drawn to Planet Fitness for three major reasons  — we are a judgement-free environment, we are affordable, and we are convenient.”

Roxborough resident Nicole Falcione agrees. “I joined PF since it was close to home, reasonably priced and had everything I needed,” Falcione said. “I’ve canceled my other [gym] memberships and am very pleased with Planet Fitness. It’s very clean and the staff is helpful.”

Memberships start at $10 a month with an additional one time initiation fee. The facility is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
