2 Philadelphia officers hurt by flying car part

A metal part shot from a burning station wagon, striking and injuring two Philadelphia police officers who were helping battle the fire.

Police say a 32-year-old officer was hospitalized for a broken lower leg and a 28-year-old sustained a leg wound that required stitches.

Police say the officers were injured as they aided firefighters at a garage fire in the city’s Frankford section around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

They say a foot-long shock absorber flew about 100 feet from the bumper a fully engulfed Volvo station wagon and missed several firefighters before hitting the officers.
