Walking in the street next to Phila. City Hall could cost you

Philadelphia is getting serious about keeping pedestrians from walking near the construction project outside City Hall.   

Signs just posted threaten fines for those who walk out in the street at the City Hall construction zone instead of crossing the street to use a sidewalk.  Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says far too many people are walking out in the street.

“You see people walking out in a lane of traffic and anyone who has been around City Hall clearly sees how cars drive around City Hall, there may not be ample time to stop, it is still a driving lane,” said Ramsey.

It appears, no pedestrians have been hit since construction began last year, but Commissioner Ramsey says he’s concerned.

“These are adults, I can’t make people do anything but I can give them ample warning, if we are forced to take enforcement action we will, but I hope it doesn’t come to that,” said Ramsey.

The fine for jaywalking in Philadelphia is $119.50.
