Months in advance, Clarke appears to have sewn up bid for Philadelphia Council President

It appears that Philadelphia City Council has a new president.

A petition has been signed by 10 current and incoming council members supporting Councilman Darrell Clarke to be the next president, and although the vote won’t come until January, Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell says Clarke is right for the position.

“I like Jim Kenney and I like Darrell Clarke, we made an agreement, I am running for majority leader and we’ll go from there,” said Blackwell.

Mayor Michael Nutter says he will work with council no matter who wins the top job.

“Whatever ultimately happens I’m going to work with all the members and the leadership in an effort to move this city forward,” said Nutter.

Counilwoman Marian Tasco and Jim Kenney were running for the post, but Clarke has apparently put together 10 votes, one more than necessary to ensure his election.
