New Jersey State Police hail veterans
On the day before Veterans Day, New Jersey State police held a special ceremony in Trenton to recognize troopers who served in the military.
New Jersey State Police Detective David Ockovic of Phillipsburg is a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. He was deployed to Iraq in 2003 during the first year of the war. He said he is concerned that many Americans now aren’t focused on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“We tend to forget all the freedoms and liberties that we have here, are because of those that are in uniform and put themselves in harm’s way,” said Ockovic. “The country has been at war for like 10 years now. I think a lot of people really are starting to get it. I think the support has been good overall but it could always be better.”
New Jersey Adjutant General Glenn Rieth said 48 percent of those serving in the Armed Forces are citizen soldiers. He praised the dedication of reservists in what he calls an era of persistent conflict.
