[REBROADCAST] JAY VARNER’s first book is a memoir titled Nothing Left to Burn. In it, Varner tells of three generations of men connected by fire in the small town of McVeytown, Pennsylvania. There’s Jay, a young boy, then young man, who grows up to be a reporter for the local paper, assigned to cover, among other beats, the local fire and accident news. There’s Jay’s dad, the town’s fire chief, a hard-working local hero whose obsession with fighting fires kept him absent for much of Jay’s childhood, and who died when Jay was still young. And then there’s Jay’s grandfather, a convicted arsonist. Nothing Left to Burn is a memoir about the kinds of secrets we don't even want to tell ourselves.
