Lori Tharps

Lori L. Tharps is an assistant professor of journalism at Temple University, an author and a mom. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she moved to Philadelphia after living in New York City for more than a decade. While her heart will always be in Brooklyn, Tharps and her bilingual, bicultural clan of five — that's three kids and a husband — now reside in Mt. Airy and couldn't be happier. Although Lori has yet to discover the secret to the magical work/life balance, she is equally happy hanging with her kids as she is writing and teaching. Currently she is at work on a new book about skin color politics in American families called 'Same Family, Different Colors.' Her previous titles include 'Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America,' 'Kinky Gazpacho: Life, Love & Spain' and 'Substitute Me.' She blogs regularly at MyAmericanMeltingPot.
