The sound of opera today

Listen

GUESTS: ANA SOKOLOVIC, MISSY MAZZOLI & LEMBIT BEECHER

What does opera sound like today? As classical music orchestras are inventing new ways to secure season subscriptions, what are the opera company programmers doing? And must opera keep its traditional, narrative form? Some production companies are going outside the walls of an opera house as Opera Philadelphia is staging a performance, with FringeArts, at FringeArts’ new performance space, a former municipal pump house. This is the launch of Opera Philadelphia’s “Opera in the City” series. We’ve invited a few composers into the Radio Times studio and we’ll listen to excerpts of their work. Serbian-born, Montreal-based composer, ANA SOKOLOVIC will see the American premier of her a cappella, chamber opera Svadba-Wedding, open this weekend. And we’ll find out what two Opera Philadelphia composers-in-residence – Lansdale-born, Brooklyn-based, MISSY MAZZOLI, and California native, LEMBIT BEECHER – are working on.
