Some suggestions about how we can live with guns

Listen

Gun control hardly came up during the 2012 election.  Obama briefly mentioned an assault weapons ban in one of the debates but neither Governor Romney nor the President really weighed in on what’s become one of the most divisive political issues in our country.  The powerful gun lobby effectively squashes any attempt at gun restrictions and even the horrific mass shootings in Aurora, Colorado and Tucson, or the 30,000 people who die each year from guns, haven’t changed tenor of the debate.  So how do we come up with sensible solutions to gun violence?  Is there ground for compromise?  Author CRAIG WHITNEY thinks there may be a way to bring both sides together.   The former New York Times editor has written a book, “Living With Guns: A Liberal’s Case for the Second Amendment” that argues the answer may be in controlling the violence instead of weapons.  This hour, Marty talks to Whitney about the history of guns in American, why they play such a prominent role in our culture and how we can find middle ground on the gun control debate.
